This Hopkins backyard had a serious elevation problem. The slope made the space hard to use - just a lot of wasted ground that looked rough and felt disconnected from the house. The homeowners wanted something that actually worked for them, not just something that looked okay from a distance.

We came in and built new boulder retaining walls across the full width of the backyard. These aren't small walls either. You can see how much grade we were managing - the walls hold back a significant amount of soil and create a clean, level yard below. That kind of structural work takes planning and the right equipment to pull off correctly.

The sawn steps were a big part of making this functional. Sawn boulders have a flat, finished face on top that gives you a solid, wide stepping surface - way more usable than round boulders alone. The contrast between the rough, natural retaining boulders and those clean-cut step faces is sharp. It looks intentional, because it is.

What we ended up with is a backyard that actually makes sense. There's a flat, open lower yard now with clear elevation separation and a natural stone staircase connecting the levels. The whole thing has a cohesive, built-to-last feel that you just don't get from timber walls or block systems.

Boulder retaining walls done right are meant to last decades with basically zero maintenance. No rotting, no cracking, no panels shifting out of place. For a yard with this much grade change, natural boulders were the right call - both structurally and visually.
