This Hopkins backyard is a great example of what we deal with all the time - a sloped lot that looks nice enough from a distance but just isn't functional. You can't really use the space, water runs where you don't want it, and there's no good way to get from one level to the next. That's exactly the kind of problem boulder retaining walls are built to fix.
The lower wall is fully set and it's already doing the heavy lifting - literally. Each boulder is placed with intention, fitted tight against its neighbors so the whole structure locks together. No block, no mortar, no manufactured material. Just natural granite boulders stacked the right way. That's what makes these walls last.
We're mid-progress on the upper wall now. The excavation work to cut and shape those terraced levels is what makes the finished product look clean. Get that part wrong and everything above it suffers. We use a Kubota compact excavator with a hydraulic grapple attachment to handle and place each boulder with precision - it's the kind of control you need when you're fitting irregular stones together and want the wall to hold for decades.
Once both walls are complete, we'll be cutting and setting boulder sawn steps to connect the two levels, then finishing with final grading and topsoil throughout. What's rough and raw right now will come together as usable, flat yard space that actually makes sense for the homeowner. That's the whole point of tiered retaining walls - turning a hill into something you can actually enjoy.
Every sloped yard has potential. It just takes the right approach, the right equipment, and crews who know how to read the land and build accordingly. Stay tuned - the finished result on this one is going to be worth the wait.
