Timber retaining walls have a lifespan. When they go, they really go - rotting posts, leaning boards, and soil that starts creeping where it shouldn't. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this Wayzata property. The old timber wall had run its course, and it was time to pull it out and start fresh with something built to last.
We went with a full boulder retaining wall system. Natural boulders are one of the best options for a situation like this - they're incredibly heavy, they lock together naturally, and they don't rot, warp, or shift the way timber does over time. The wall needed to hold a significant amount of grade along the front of the property, so we weren't cutting corners on the material or the build.
What we ended up with is a double-course wall running the full length of the front yard - tight stone-to-stone contact, consistent coursing throughout, and a clean line along the driveway edge. The existing concrete steps tie right into the wall on the right side, so everything flows together the way it should. Functionally, the grade is locked in. Visually, it's a serious upgrade.
Beyond curb appeal, this is really about protecting the property long-term. A failing wall isn't just an eyesore - it's an erosion problem, a soil stability problem, and depending on what's sitting above it, potentially a foundation concern. Getting ahead of it with a properly built boulder wall means this homeowner won't be dealing with it again anytime soon.
We handle these projects from demolition all the way through final grading. Tearing out the old wall, prepping the base, placing and fitting each boulder - it's all part of the process. If you've got a retaining wall that's seen better days, this is the kind of work we do.
